Winter 2022 Classes and Workshops

Surface History: Layered Abstract Painting, February 26, 27, 2022, on Zoom

9am-noon and 1:00-4 pm Pacific Daylight Time on Zoom

Surface History is a workshop for abstract painters, using several approaches to collage as a base for oil or acrylic painting as well as using abstract drawing under or over paint layers.

Workshop Description:

Collage drawings, prints, painted paper and an assortment of plain papers to create a variety of ground layers and create abstract structure. The addition of paint (house paint, oil and cold wax, oil pigment sticks or acrylic paint) and mark making materials (art graf, colored pencils, etc.) enhances the surface and reinforces compositional ideas. This is a unique opportunity to work with materials in a new, interactive way, with the potential to send your painting practice in exciting directions and increase your knowledge of what is possible. Artists will work on Strathmore Heavyweight Mixed Media paper and/or wood boards (flat or cradled), to add and subtract a creative mix of collage, drawing, printing and painting. This workshop is limited to eight students.

Workshop includes

*daily Zoom instruction and demonstrations
*slide shows and discussion of mixed media artwork from established artists
*access to Surface History Resource Page on padlet.com--images, videos, links,    materials, ideas and inspiration and Surface History Materials Page
*group discussion and individual feedback
*instructor availability for questions during all workshop hours

Materials list available upon registration  $350.

Drawing Is Everything: 6 weeks of abstract drawing

Tuesdays, January 11, 18, 25, February 1, 8, 15, 2022
4-5:30pm Pacific Time on Zoom

Workshop Description:

Drawing Is Everything
is an abstract drawing class, which includes a commitment to drawing everyday, brief in class exercises, discussion of abstract drawing works by various artists and sharing of student work in class.

We’ll be working with the ingredients artists use to make art as well as the design principles that help us determine what good art is. Drawing Is Everything is the name of a recent book about the abstract drawing collection at the Menil Drawing Institute in Houston, Texas--the first museum space in the U.S. dedicated to contemporary drawing.

Students will complete weekly drawing assignments and brief daily “morning pages” outside of class.

Access to Abstract Drawing Resource Page on padlet.com includes links, videos, images, artist interviews, ideas and inspiration. Access to Abstract Drawing Materials Page includes a wide variety of drawing materials: papers, mark making materials, paints, inks, brushes, pens, etc.

Drawing classes are limited to twelve students.

$350. Contact Sara

Winter/Spring In Person Workshops

January 29 10am-3pm: Drawing and Painting with Pigment Sticks
The Pence Gallery, Davis CA

“Oil paint in stick form” is how Richard Frumess, founder of R&F paints, describes these versatile, beautifully colored oil sticks. In this workshop we’ll draw and paint using Arches oil paper and R&F pigment sticks, using pigment sticks directly for dramatic color and texture, combining with solvent for watercolor effects, blending with cold wax medium for range of color. Instructor Sara Post uses pigment sticks in her abstract oil mixed media paintings and is an R&F tier instructor.

Tuition: $150.
