Zoom Abstract Drawing Classes:
General Information:
Drawing classes use Zoom for weekly meetings and the Padlet app to give students a way to share work and access drawing examples, artist links and videos. Padlet is easy to use and requires no special computer skills. Each class has its own Padlet class page with seperate sections for each student's work, allowing us to share images for viewing and feedback.
The Abstract Drawing Resource Page features a wide range of contemporary drawings, artist interviews, videos and links. The Abstract Drawing Materials Page includes resources for dry, wet and wet/dry drawing materials as well as useful papers and sketchbooks.
Class format includes weekly discussion of a contemporary art video, brief in-class drawing exercises and presentation of individual new work with feedback. Class size limited to 12. Each class is recorded for students who have to miss a session or would simply like to review.
Drawing Is Everything is an introductory abstract drawing class which addresses contemporary ideas about drawing in the 21st century. It covers specific uses of lines, shapes, forms, scale and placement of drawing elements on a surface, as well as ideas around uses of erasure and other forms of editing, edges and peripheries. The primary goal of this class is for students to establish a daily drawing practice underscored by a solid knowledge of abstract principles. Students create imaginative drawings that stand alone or can be used in service of other artwork. This class is for all levels—beginners through experienced artists. Since specific content may vary from class to class students often repeat this class to gain more drawing experience and enjoy the benefits of working with a group of other artists.
Text In Abstract Drawing extends abstract drawing processes to include various forms of text. This class surveys asemic writing, palimpsests, redaction, hand lettering, text and image story telling, stencils and scripts as well as video interviews with artists who use text in drawing and painting. The use of text is found in many contemporary art forms. While it can be challenging, combining text with drawing or painting helps us use both sides of our brains and adds flexibility to our thinking. Previous experience with abstract drawing, whether through taking Drawing Is Everything or personal practice is strongly suggested.
